Columbia University Will Pay $200 Million to Federal Government to Restore Funding

Columbia University has agreed to send $200 Million dollars to the Federal Government in exchange for access to possibly billions in Federal grant money. This comes after the Trump Administration began targeting Columbia’s funding in March for “inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students.” This statement came with pulling $400 million in funding.

Like with much of the Trump Administration’s efforts against Universities, there is little detail. Columbia was the site of large pro-Palestinian protests in the 2023-2024 school year—but so were lots of other campuses who didn’t get funding pulled. And while this seems to be an exchange of $200 million for $400 million, Columbia’s statement about their “Resolution” notes that this also restores potential access to billions in Federal money.
